As you may know the only heating we have is either from wood (stove with back-boiler) or solar thermal (hot water). With Autumn fast approaching seasoning and storing wood is a problem waiting to happen. We've even found that we've had to burn some wood on the coldest days in August so that we have hot water for the next day. So far I have made one small wood store with a slate roof, all of this was made using left-over building materials from the barn. Our wood-burner likes to burn well seasoned wood to achieve a high heat, the most efficient way to burn the wood is hard and fast with the air vents to the stove fully open. It's best to buy unseasoned wood and season it yourself which means we're approximately three years late ordering our supply... or ten years late planting. Having said that I'm sure there is some wood that we can salvage from our hedgerows. Storing and rotation of wood is at the front of my mind. Doing something about it is neither at the front, back or middle of my mind. I need to come up with a cunning plan but its not materialising very quickly.

We could do with 3 of these |

On the subject of wood and energy we can see these pylons (below) from our house, thankfully far away on the horizon. We can also see four wind turbines. There are a lot of arguments for and against wind power and I'm not sure I'd like a turbine in my back garden but I can confirm that the noise coming from this power line is awesome, it cracks and fizzes like something out of Dr. Frankenstein's laboratory, it gave me a headache and it even looks scary... I can confirm that there is no way on earth that i would live with one of these puppies in my back garden.

Anyone for a little brain fizz? |
I'll leave my brain decay in the hands of my WiFi and alcohol me thinks.
If the wood burner is really your only heat source you might need more than three times what you have now! We went through over 2 cubic meters of cut timber just between January this year and April! and we have electric heating for the hot water.
ReplyDeleteHi Richard, thanks for your comment, its great to get input. I was imagining roughly along those lines in terms of quantity of wood. We have twin immersion heaters in a 360l thermal store but in my mind they are a last resort as our electricity supplier is 'green' i.e. expensive.
